The Easter Bunny hides more than eggs

I say this every year, but I'll say it again: the Easter Bunny is just plain creepy. I don't remember being afraid of the costume as a little kid, but I do remember thinking it was a stupid idea. Everyone knew the Easter Bunny was a regular, slightly larger than normal white rabbit with magical powers, so what was the point of that silly costume? And why would I sit on his lap? It's not like he was going to ask what I wanted--bunnies weren't supposed to talk, even fake ones...A magical rabbit that opened doors with his ear and hid baskets seemed more feasible, somehow. My mom used to tell me that the regular rabbits around my house were his helpers and they reported to the Easter Bunny around Easter. (Pretty clever of my mom, even though I had to be outside for those rabbits to see me. I mean, I thought the mall Santas with fake beards were Santa's helpers, so the Easter Bunny could have had a similar entourage.)

I am finally onto Mr. Bunny, though. Ever wonder what he/she is really hiding? Holy crap!:

So beware. While you're out hunting for eggs, he/she just might be hunting for YOU!

Oh, and Happy Easter! :-P

Blurb

I'm officially going to visit Melissa in Baltimore for her book reading! Yay! It's exactly a month from today already. I just went to visit Sarah last weekend and I'm sending Mary a letter tomorrow. (Yes, a real, handwritten letter. She's becoming a nun and that's the only way to contact her!) Pretty cool. Those are all good friends that I've had since forever, it seems, (Melissa since kindergarten, Sarah since college, Mary since high school) and I'm so lucky to still have them around!

There's so much going on right now. It's pretty exciting, but also occasionally confusing. It occurs to me that timing is everything, and I'm cursing some circumstances right now. Grr. What can you do? I don't know, but I'm hoping it will kind of work itself out somehow. It usually does, eventually. Time has a tendency to cause and heal many wounds, doesn't it? *Sigh*

Have you ever been down with a female from the hood?

I think Mondays are shaping up to be be one of my favorite days of the week because of this dance class. I taught a portion of my dance today and it's a little harder than I expected it to be for them, but I think they will get it in time. It's just fast, I think. I'll tell you what, though--my incessant hand gestures come in quite handy when I'm making up choreography (so there). Dance is just like an exaggerated version of that, anyway.

The owner basically just observed the class today and she liked what I was doing. She's giving me a key to the studio next week and she already showed me where she keeps the money and all that. I am surprised at how quickly she is willing to give me all of this responsibility, though. Of course, she can absolutely trust me, but I don't know how she has determined that already.

Oh, and that dance video I posted in yesterday's blog? I suggested that song today, and the adult hip hop class is going to dance to it now, I think! My favorite part of the song: "What am I suppose to do? Get up and walk to a th-iz-ug and act like I'm innocent and cute? Nah, I’m a step like....Yeah (What it is, wit ya?) Have you ever been down wit a female from the hood?" It has a lot of potential. The music is just begging for sharp movements to go along with the accentuated beats. They have class on Thursday, which means that...well, I guess it means that I'm going to miss Thursday taiko occasionally.

Here is another awesome dance to that song. That is hip hop. I love the contrast and fusion of the sharp and fluid motions and the fact that they often play off of the words in the song. I think I easily relate to those aspects of hip hop because, actually, I am also a contrast and fusion of competing elements. I mean, for starters, the hip hop thing doesn't exactly fit with my admittedly "white bread" image, does it? This aspect of myself that has been hidden and nearly forgotten is reemerging, and I can't help but laugh. You think you know, but you have no idea...

Shocking

It's pretty hard to make a cd of hip hop songs for 8-12 year olds that doesn't involve sex or bad language of some kind. (I came across this new song, though. Ghetto fabulous. I really like the dance, too!!) Don't get me wrong, hip hop/r&b is among my favorite genres, but it's becoming less and less appropriate for kids. Whatever happened to metaphors, at least? Half of the songs on the cd so far are from the 90's, when things seemed a little more subtle. For example, R. Kelly did a song back in the day called "Ignition" that said things like "I'm bout to take my key and stick it in the ignition," (not going on the cd, though) and nowadays we get songs like "Birthday Sex," where they say things like, "Just need your body to make birthday sex, birthday sex (G-spot g-spot let me hit that g-spot g-spot girl)." I like both of those songs, to be honest, but "Birthday Sex" is severely lacking in creativity (um, the song...no comment on anyone's personal experience *blush*).

This kind of thing carries over into tv and commercials, too, obviously. Now, I actually think the Quizno's commercial I'm about to show you is hilarious, in a sick kind of way, but I was shocked to see the full version on TV. Have they no shame? (Fun fact: A periscope flashes for half a second in :06.) "Not doing that again. That burned?" "Put it in me?" Haha, wow. There's an edited version on TV now, but it's just not the same as the original:

I suppose, while I'm at it, I will leave you with a wise fortune from a recent fortune cookie, open to interpretation: "You will lose the small ones but win the big ones." Ha.

Well, now that I have gotten that out of my system, it's time to finish up that kiddie cd...

Word

I have read this George Carlin thing before, but I just got another email about it that reminded me how good it is. In case you haven't read it (or if you have, read it again):

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider Freeways but narrower viewpoints. We spend more but have less, we buy more but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge but less judgment, more experts yet more problems, more medicine but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.

We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.

We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years to life, not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer space but not inner space. We've done larger things, but not better things.

We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We've conquered the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less.

These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes. These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom. A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete...

Remember to spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever.

Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side.

Remember to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn't cost a cent.

Remember to say "I love you" to your partner and your loved ones, but most of all mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you.

Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment, for someday that person will not be there again.

Give time to love, give time to speak! And give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind.

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER:

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.
